The best of cartooning: how and why.

Jeff MacNelly, the legendary cartoonist, once told me “Cartoons are art—never let anyone tell you they’re not.” The three-time Pulitzer-prize winning artist was presenting awards for published newspaper cartoon work, and I was fortunate to receive one. But moreover, I got to meet and talk with MacNelly then, and later in his Richmond Times Dispatch office. Art, he’d said, and I took that to heart, studying Jeff’s work, but also Chic Young’s Blondie and Jim Unger’s Herman, plus many others. Style, lines, black, white, space, flow—all of it.

This collection is a return to that art of cartooning, now seemingly lost in the overgrown kudzu of GIFs, memes and other soulless digital media. The cartoon frame I use here is unorthodox: landscape, to take advantage of the left to right flow of image and thought. Simple black lines, plenty of wide, white space in a breakaway presentation I think Jeff would appreciate.

Cartoons: art worth saving—and savoring.
